SHENZHEN has unveiled a five-year action plan calling for the public’s participation in the construction of ecological civilization, marking the first of its kind in a prefecture-level city in China, the Daily Sunshine reported.

Ecological civilization advocates the harmonious coexistence of human beings and the natural environment, the aim of which is to establish modes of sustainable development and consumption.

The action plan, jointly compiled by six local government departments, consists of 29 items, including the general goal, major tasks and safeguard measures.

Key tasks in six aspects are clarified, including strengthening the publicity of ecological civilization, carrying out social mobilization activities for ecological civilization construction and disseminating the concept of ecological value.

In terms of ecological civilization education, the scheme proposes to incorporate the concept into the primary and secondary school education system, integrate citywide ecological environmental education resources, build a practical information platform for Shenzhen youth and teenagers to study and practice ecological civilization, organize professionals to compile or recommend courseware for students and schools, in a bid to further promote on-campus ecological civilization education.

Moreover, the scheme lists actions with Shenzhen’s characteristics by underpinning environment and health literacy (EHL), including launching EHL improvement campaigns, promoting publicity and education on EHL and forming EHL communication expert teams.

EHL is the capacity for people to understand the individual’s health care, environmental exposures that can affect one’s community, as well as the interplay between the environment and the individual.

Advancing EHL can improve health by raising public awareness of potentially harmful environmental exposures and empowering communities to avoid or reduce such exposures, as per the plan. (Shenzhen Daily)
