SHENZHEN recently issued the first ordinance on the forest chief scheme, stating requirements for implementing scientific greening and promoting natural habitat systems, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

The order requires Party and government officials at all levels to take responsibility for protecting and developing forest and grassland resources.

It also emphasizes the rational arrangement of national land for greening, increasing coastal shelterbelts, pest control and ancient tree protection to achieve high-quality advancement of the forest chief scheme.

At the end of 2021, the Shenzhen Municipal Government unveiled an implementation plan to roll out the forest chief scheme citywide, with the Shenzhen Party chief as the city’s general forest chief and the mayor as the municipal forest chief.

The scheme, a major measure to improve Shenzhen’s ecological civilization system, aims to enhance forestry management capabilities and build the city into an example of Beautiful China, where humans and nature live together in harmony.

As of now, Shenzhen has established a four-level forest chief organization system, with a total of 1,772 forest chiefs. The city has designated 672,000 hectares of forest and 36,900 hectares of wetlands as key areas protected by chiefs, whose performance will serve as the basis for their comprehensive performance evaluation as officials.

Wutong Mountain National Forest Park, Dapeng Peninsula National Geopark and 25 other nature habitats are classified among key ecological areas under the supervision of chiefs at municipal and district levels.

Shenzhen has divided its forest resources into grids and arranged supervisors and forest rangers to take care of every grid in a bid to improve daily management efficiency.

At the same time, Shenzhen has also set up a “forest chief + tree chief” system, with forest chiefs being responsible for the protection of ancient trees in their jurisdictions.

Residents are also encouraged to actively participate in ecological protection, popularizing nature conservation knowledge to the public and patrolling the forest. (Shenzhen Daily)
