A SNACK bar employee, who is confined in a locked-down residential compound in Shekou due to the pandemic control, has been volunteering in the fight against COVID.
The young man’s behavior has garnered residents’ gratitude and netizens’ praise, the Daily Sunshine reported.
The employee, Zhang Xuliang, works at a food store selling changfen, or steamed rice flour rolls, a Cantonese snack, along Huaguo Road in Shekou.
At 6:40 a.m. Feb. 25, Zhang answered the call of nature at nearby Milan Phase II residential compound and has been stuck there ever since. The area has been placed under lockdown due to a confirmed COVID case.
Zhang immediately contacted his friend, who brought him a quilt, clothes and toiletries.
“Given that I was not allowed to leave the compound, I decided to be a volunteer,” Zhang said.
Zhang has thus settled at Milan Phase II’s property management office and been filling his days with various pandemic control tasks.
He helps medical staff register residents’ nucleic acid test records in the morning, receives and delivers food and daily necessities to households in the compound in the afternoon, and undertakes disinfection tasks at night.
After several days working, Zhang now deeply understands the hard work of community workers and medical staff there.
“They stayed up several nights for virus screening and are occupied with registering residents’ testing records door to door, delivering parcels, and sending food to elderly people in need. I am doing my best to lend a hand,” he said.
The neighborhood residents are amused while touched by this young man’s story. In Milan Phase II residents’ WeChat group, many of them have promised to visit him at the snack bar where he works after the lockdown is lifted.
